J.J.
Cale is a songwriter most commonly known
(or unknown) as the writer of the songs
that Eric Clapton covered, "After Midnight"
and "Cocaine", and that Lynyrd Skynyrd
covered, "Call Me the Breeze". Cale
put out his first album,"Naturally"
in 1972, and since, has released eleven
more full length albums, the latest
being Guitar Man. J.J.'s music is definitely
very laid back, but he, himself, is
not. He even reffered to himself on
a radio interview as "a very nervous
jerk". But whatever the case may be,
the man turns out some of the most innovative,
soulful music around today. Cale is
a seductive, exciting songwriter; and
one of the best qualities of his songwriting
is that it is restricted. Rather than
hook you from the start, J.J.'s tunes
"creep up from behind", as more than
one reviewer has put it. Cale prefers
laid back, deep grooves that tantalize
the listener. His voice is usually a
second thought in his music, it seems
to be beyond the instruments, up in
the mix, which just makes the music
all the more enticing. To sum it up,
to me, JJ Cale is pure honesty. His
voice, his guitar sound, his beats;
everything is just raw musical honesty.
He is certainly one of the very best
songwriters of our time
